Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Consumer protection advocacy plays a vital role in safeguarding the rights of consumers and ensuring that they are not exploited by businesses. In Sokoto State, as in many parts of Nigeria, consumers often face challenges related to unfair business practices, product safety, and fraudulent transactions. Digital media, especially platforms such as social media and blogs, has become a powerful tool in raising awareness about consumer rights and mobilizing people to demand better protection from the government and businesses. According to a study by Ibrahim et al. (2023), digital media has significantly improved the reach and visibility of consumer protection issues, enabling quicker responses to complaints and greater transparency in business transactions. This study seeks to investigate the role of digital media in promoting consumer protection advocacy in Sokoto State, examining how it has been used to highlight consumer rights issues, influence policy, and improve consumer awareness.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing use of digital media in Sokoto State, there is limited research on its specific impact on consumer protection advocacy. While social media has the potential to spread awareness about consumer rights, there is a lack of understanding regarding its effectiveness in promoting long-term change in consumer protection practices. This study aims to explore the extent to which digital media has influenced consumer advocacy efforts in Sokoto, focusing on its role in raising awareness, fostering accountability, and empowering consumers.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore how digital media has been used in Sokoto State to promote consumer protection advocacy.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of digital media in raising awareness about consumer rights in Sokoto State.
  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities associated with using digital media for consumer protection advocacy in Sokoto.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  3. There are distinct challenges and opportunities in using digital media for consumer protection advocacy in Sokoto State.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of digital media in advocating for consumer protection in Sokoto State. The findings will help policymakers, consumer rights organizations, and businesses understand the importance of leveraging digital platforms to empower consumers and improve consumer protection frameworks.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on Sokoto State and explores the role of digital media in consumer protection advocacy within this region. The study does not include other regions of Nigeria or examine other forms of media, such as print or broadcast media.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Digital Media: Online platforms such as social media, blogs, websites, and apps used for communication and information dissemination.
  • Consumer Protection Advocacy: Efforts to safeguard the rights of consumers, including raising awareness of consumer rights, addressing grievances, and promoting fair business practices.
  • Consumer Rights: Legal and ethical entitlements of consumers to be protected from fraudulent practices, unsafe products, and exploitation by businesses.
